High winds cause changes to Around the Bay 50km ride

Strong winds have forced the Around the Bay 50km route to change - riders will now head out to Mordialloc along Beach Road.

Due to high wind speeds, we’ve had to change the route of the Around the Bay 50km ride and 50km Schools Challenge ride.

Over the past 48 hours, we’ve been working closely with the SES, Victoria Police, VicRoads and the Bureau of Meteorology to monitor the situation as we get closer to the ride.

We’ve been advised that winds averaging 60km/h, with gusts of up to 100km/h, have been forecast for Sunday at the time when more than 1,000 50km riders are set to return over the Westgate Bridge from Altona. It’s a risk that we are not willing to take.

Rather than cancel the ride, we have an alternative route ready to go, which will take riders along Melbourne’s iconic Beach Road to Mordialloc.

The new route, which will be roughly 60km in length, will still see participants leave the start line at 7:30am from Alexandra Gardens, before heading out to Mordialloc via St Kilda and Elwood. The ride will head along Beach Road, before returning to the finish line in Melbourne. The first 10km of this route will also take place on closed roads.

We understand that some riders may be disappointed not to go over the Westgate Bridge - but Beach Road is one of Melbourne's favourite riding routes for a reason, it's relatively flat with seaside views so all you have to worry about is pedalling.

Rider safety is our highest priority. It’s something we will not compromise on and we’re confident that you’ll still have an amazing day on the bike.

If you have any questions, please come and see the friendly team in the kit collection tent at Alexandra Gardens, Melbourne until 5pm Saturday 8 October and from 4:30am-8am Sunday 9 October. Alternatively, please call event assistance on 0425 381 816 or 0425 777 484.

Please note: Rider safety is always our highest priority and as outlined in the Around the Bay terms and conditions, the route is subject to change. We understand that it may be disappointing for some riders, but we will not be issuing refunds as a result of the change. Bicycle Network appreciates your support and understanding.

All other ride options will go ahead as planned.
