Contingency planning for the RACV Great Vic

Due to recurring closures on the Great Ocean Road, Bicycle Network has developed alternative plans for a section of this year’s RACV Great Victorian __bike Ride.

In response to recent road closures between Wye River and Separation Creek, Bicycle Network has taken a proactive approach to event planning, with the development of an alternative route for day seven of the ride.

On Friday 2 December, more than 4,000 riders are expected to pedal from Apollo Bay to Bellbrae via the Great Ocean Road.

The alternative Great Vic route will redirect riders via Skenes Creek Road to Deans Marsh on Friday 2 December. The following day, the ride will travel from Deans Marsh to Queenscliff via Deans-Marsh Lorne Road and the Great Ocean Road.

However, at this stage, there are no confirmed changes to the route and the ride will go ahead as planned.

Bicycle Network’s General Manager of Events, Rebecca Lane, said that Bicycle Network is committed to delivering an unforgettable Great Vic that promises to bring significant economic benefit to the region.

“At this stage, the ride will go ahead as planned, however, we’ve been working hard to develop an alternative route should the Great Ocean Road be closed as we pass through the region this month,” said Ms Lane.

“We’re committed to supporting the communities along the route who are anticipating the arrival of over 4,000 riders, and delivering a great ride experience for participants.”

Ms Lane emphasised that the contingency plans take into consideration all road users, and has been developed in conjunction with Colac Otway Shire, Surf Coast Shire, VicRoads and Victoria Police.

“We appreciate your support, patience and understanding should we need to implement the route changes, and can’t wait to bring the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride to Victoria’s South West,” added Ms Lane.

If required, the proposed Great Vic contingency plan involves two significant changes:

  1. Alternate route: The route will be redirected via Skenes Creek Road to Deans Marsh on Friday 2 December. On Saturday 3 December, the ride will then travel from Deans Marsh to Marsh to Queenscliff via Deans-Marsh Lorne Road and the Great Ocean Road. Changed traffic conditions, including areas of restricted vehicle access, will be implemented.

  2. Campsite relocation: Bellbrae campsite on Friday 2 December will be relocated to Deans Marsh Recreation Reserve.

Local residents and businesses in Deans Marsh and Lorne impacted by the potential route changes are also invited to attend the following community meetings in Deans Marsh and Lorne on Tuesday 15 November.
