Newcrest Orange Challenge to shine a light on Central NSW

A two-day cycling, food and wine festival will take over the regional town of Orange this weekend, as more than 1,200 __bike riders and their supporters get ready to take part in Bicycle Network’s second Newcrest Orange Challenge.

Held from Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 March, the Newcrest Orange Challenge community festival will feature a wide range of family-friendly activities including a free food and wine showcase, live music, face painting, a jumping castle, BMX pump track and the Newcrest Orange Challenge ride.

For the first time, the community festival will feature a special kid’s charity ride where aspiring cycling stars will get the chance to mimic their heroes (or parents) on a four-kilometre pedal along local __bike paths. Entry is a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to Give Me 5 for Kids.

Bicycle Network spokesperson Anthea Hargreaves said that the Newcrest Orange Challenge is more than just a bike ride, rather it’s a weekend-long celebration of the local region.

“Orange has a reputation for fresh produce, fine wine and award-winning restaurants. We can’t wait to showcase the area and all it has to offer to Australia’s bike riding community,” said Ms Hargreaves.

“The Newcrest Orange Challenge festival isn’t just for riders once they cross the finish line – with plenty to do across the entire weekend, there’s something for the whole community to enjoy.”

Along with the 1,200 cyclists who are set to take part in either the 70km or 170km Newcrest Orange Challenge ride on Sunday 5 March, it’s expected that family, friends and supporters will see more than 2,000 people from interstate and overseas flock to Orange and the surrounding region.

In its second year, the Newcrest Orange Challenge is proudly supported by Destination NSW and Newcrest Mining Limited.

Peter Sharpe, General Manager Cadia Valley Operations said that Newcrest is proud to be involved in the event.

"Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations is proud to be supporting the Newcrest Orange Challenge and it is our hope our commitment helps to continue to grow the event, and sees Orange further as a leading regional destination," said Mr Sharpe

"The Newcrest Orange Challenge aligns perfectly with Cadia’s Community Partnership Program, which aims to support long term programs in the region, with particular focus on the tourism, agricultural and health sectors."
