The Youth Apprenticeship is a 10-week program designed to give youth ages 14-18 a basic comprehension of bicycle mechanics. Youth may apply using the following application. Youth who complete the program and pass the final practical exam will receive a certificate of completion. This program will provide youth with basic training which may assist them in seeking employment in the bicycle industry. This is an excellent introductory, hands-on program for any youth interested in the fields of mechanics or engineering.
What to Expect:
-
Weekly classes covering a variety of subjects and components of the bicycle. Class days may vary each session and are 1-2 hours long
-
Homework is required. This may be a combination of reading material, research, and hands-on practice at the collective. Several times will be provided each week for practice and homework at the SLC collective. Expect to spend 2-4 hours per week on homework and practical application.
-
Participants are expected to attend each class and must schedule a time to make-up any missed classes.
-
Graduates from the Youth Apprenticeship will be given priority if they wish to apply for a Jr. Mechanic position at the SLC Collective. Jr. Mechanic jobs will be filled throughout the year as they are available, and are given to youth who demonstrate aptitude, a positive attitude, team-work, leadership, and a desire to learn.
