A proposal for a network of separated __bike lanes in the Brisbane CBD has been rejected by Brisbane City Council, in a decision criticised as poorly considered.
The plan proposed by the group Space4cyclingBNE called for separated lanes on George, Edward, Ann, Margaret and Herschel streets.
It was submitted in August 2016 and supported by a 3,000-signature petition. It is thought to have been overlooked since then, before being considered – and rejected – in January 2017.
Spokesperson for the Space4cyclingBNE group, Belinda Ward, told the Brisbane Times that separated lanes would encourage people who currently shy away from riding into the city.
"Commuters said the last bit into central city was too scary for them to ride," Ms Ward said, adding that the CityCycle public bikes don't get used to their potential because of the lack of protection for __bike riders in the CBD.
The Brisbane Times reported that the council rejected the proposal “because it would mean the loss of roadside parking, bus stops, taxi ranks and general traffic disruption during construction.”
