In the late part of 2016, Bicycle NT and the Bicycle Network joined forces to create Bicycle Network Northern Territory.
Work started earlier this month, with a Darwin office opening and Development Manager Grant Fenton starting his new role. An informal launch of the office was held and attended by a strong contingent of Darwin and Palmerston community and business leaders.
Speaking with the NT News at the launch, Grant said “I’m thrilled to be able to take __bike riding to the next level in the NT and make it a prime example of how positively bikes can impact the health and livability of communities."
He also added that conditions in the NT made it an ideal place to cycle.
“There’s good foundations for __bike infrastructure,” he said.
“The weather is beautiful, and it’s a great way to see parts of the Territory.”
Grant hasn't wasted any time since stepping into the role, spending his first few weeks meeting with a range of stakeholders and key players from the Northern Territory Government, City of Darwin, Alice Springs Town Council and the City of Palmerston, as well as cycling and peak sporting bodies. Over the next couple of weeks, Grant will be reaching out our NT members and supporters.
The real early push for Bicycle Network Northern Territory will be to connect with people who were committed to the former Bicycle NT and bring them on the journey as well as getting a budget submission into government.
A strong focus will be on increasing and servicing our membership base in the NT, as well as advocating for greater bicycle infrastructure across the NT's major and regional centres.
While the office has only been open a few weeks, our Development Manager is full steam ahead into discussion with the key players around the design for Barneson Boulevard as a new entry point to the eastern end of the CBD.
The early design work is looking very positive for the bicycle community with a strong push to have separated bike lanes.
