The Ascent ride on hold, program to continue

Bicycle Network's women-only ride in Victoria's Yarra Ranges, The Ascent, will not go ahead on Sunday 28 April, this year.

Despite a huge effort from the team and our supporters, we fell short of our 1,500 rider target and fundraising goal.

We would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to the 624 people who supported The Ascent crowdfunding campaign through donating, buying an entry or buying a jersey to support women's cycling.

Bicycle Network's General Manager of Communications and Advocacy, Anthea Hargreaves said that while it was really disappointing for everyone, Bicycle Network is steadfast in the belief that 50% of __bike riders should be women.

"It’s devastating that we won’t have the chance to provide women with the opportunity to experience the sense of community, fun and support that The Ascent ride offers, it’s definitely not the end of The Ascent," Ms Hargreaves said.

"The Ascent women-only ride has faced more hurdles than most - including resistance from the local community, local media and fellow __bike riders."

"But we know that there are women out there who want to ride but currently don't and we won't stop fighting until we see 50/50 split not only across our events but out on the roads, paths and trails."

The good news is that The Ascent program will expand in 2017 with help from our Behaviour Change team and will continue to run a number of social rides, social nights and skill sessions hosted by our incredible team of ambassadors.

If you haven’t been to one yet, come along to one of our rides in February and see for yourself why The Ascent is so special and important as we journey towards 50/50.

See what's on for February
