350,000 students get pedalling for Ride2School

Bicycle Network: Latest News

Around 350,000 excited Australian students are set to ride, walk, scoot or skate to school tomorrow morning as part of Bicycle Network’s ninth annual National Ride2School Day – breaking the record set last year by 50,000 students.

More than 2,000 school communities - including parents and teachers – are ditching the car to join in the fun by actively travelling to school.

Bicycle Network’s General Manager of Behaviour Change, Gemma McCrohan said she was thrilled with the number of students getting active while they travel to school tomorrow.

"It's fantastic to see so many schools, students, teachers and parents adopting a healthy habit by riding to school today,” she said.

“Especially as experts recommend children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day to maintain their health,” Ms McCrohan said.

“Research shows 8 out of 10 students aren’t active enough and riding a bike to school is an easy and fun way to get active! Adding to which, students who ride to school arrive energized, alert and more ready to learn,” she said.

National Ride2School Day is part of Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program which works with more than 2,000 schools throughout the year to help develop a healthy, active travel culture.

“Schools registered in the Ride2School program have more than double the national average of students riding or walking to school,” Ms McCrohan said.

“We encourage Australian schools to get involved in the program and encourage their students to be active on their way to school every day,” she said.
