WOW! What an incredible stage of mountain bike riding. Today had everything. Groenlandberg mountain looks like you could be on the moon and the Lebanon single track lets you know that there is a heaven.
It was a very tough stage of bike riding with a mix of enormous climbs and technical descends and sweeping single tracks. What made it so tough, was the fact that it took us 7 hours and 10 minutes. Gavin and I had a strategy of using the first 3 big stages as training rides. It all sounds great, but 2 800m of climbing takes it out of you no matter what speed you ride at. I have to say, my partner was majestic today. He set an excellent pace for a good part of the morning and Team achieved what it set out to do by the time we crossed the line. Probably the most impressive stage I’ve completed in my measly two years of racing, but hearing veterans of 5 Epics, they agreed with our sentiments.
The rain was more of a drizzle and it certainly helped the riders more than it hampered them. It kept the temperatures nice and low and gave us a chance remove dehydration and heat exhaustion from our list of potential issues.
I am sitting in our lumbering cow (motor home) under the duvet typing this update and my legs are throbbing and the rear end knows it’s been on a saddle for 7 hours. We have our magnificent mechanics working on our bikes in the rain, getting us ready for another heart thumping stage.
See ya tomorrow!
