Stats start rolling in

Bicycle Network: Latest News

Early figures from today’s Super Tuesday bike count show huge numbers of riders commuting to work in Melbourne, with many key routes at saturation point.

In Swanston Street a total of 920 riders crossed La Trobe street heading both ways in the morning peak. Male riders increased by about 5 per cent and females 10 per cent.

At Swanston and Flinders Street about 1200 riders entered the CBD while about 520 riders headed south.

Total movements at the Flinders Street-Swanston Street intersection increased by 17 per cent over the year before

Super Tuesday is a visual count of riders in the morning peak between 7 am and 9 am. This year bikes were counted in more than 800 locations in Victoria, NSWS, WA and SA.

Results will be flowing in for some time. The data is then analysed—a process that takes months before being provided to the municipalities that have participated in the count.

The information is used to inform decisions about transport planning and bike infrastructure investment.

Footscray Road in Docklands has witnessed some of the most dramatic growth.

Other locations mostly increased at between five and 15 per cent.

Some of the extremely busy routes, such as the main Yarra Trail, are increasing but not dramatically, as the paths can be choked at peak periods with the large numbers.

(Please note: We'll update these stats once more information is available)
